13 Breakfast Items With More Sugar Than A Doughnut

personal chef fort lauderdale

This is either great news or it’s terribly upsetting, depending on your preferences.

If you think a doughnut is one of the most sugar-laden breakfast choices you could make, you’d be wrong.
This isn’t to say a doughnut is ever a nutritious choice. While delicious, it’s filled with empty calories and provides you with virtually none of the vitamins and nutrients that will keep you alive, whereas something like a banana is a good source of potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C and vitamin B-6.
But, shockingly, a banana has more sugar than a doughnut.
Now, don’t stop eating bananas just yet. But it’s important to be aware of how much sugar you’re eating. The World Health Organization recommends that only 5 percent of daily caloric intake come from sugar, and the typical American diet consists of 13 percent calories from sugar.
“Many Americans eat about five times the amount of sugar they should consume,” Natasa Janicic-Kahric, an associate professor of medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, told The Washington Post.
Besides contributing to weight gain, sugar ― whether natural or added ― has a host of negative effects on our bodies: It creates a vicious cycle of intense cravings, impairs memory and learning skills, may cause or contribute to depression and anxiety, and is a risk factor for age-related cognitive decline and dementia.
So let’s take a look at how much sugar is in 13 common breakfast items that, while often more nutritious than a doughnut, contain more sugar than a glazed treat from Dunkin’ Donuts, which contains 260 calories and 12 grams of sugar.
(To be fair, not all doughnuts are created equal: An apple fritter from Dunkin’, for instance, has 420 calories and 24 grams of sugar.)
Here’s the rundown:
Dunkin’ Donuts Glazed Donut: 260 calories, 12g sugar
Starbucks Chai Latte with 2% Milk, Tall: 240 calories, 32g sugar
Kellogg’s Raisin Bran: 190 calories, 18g sugar
Silk Vanilla Almond Milk (80): 80 calories, 13g sugar
Noosa Blueberry Yogurt: 280 calories, 31g sugar
Panera Cinnamon Crunch Bagel: 380 calories, 32g sugar
Liquiteria Mean Green Acai Bowl: 620 calories, 54g sugar
Banana: 105 calories, 14g sugar
Tropicana Original Orange Juice: 110 calories, 22g sugar
Mott’s 100% Original Apple Juice: 120 calories, 28g sugar

Now don’t go and replace all your healthy breakfast options with doughnuts, but keep these numbers in mind if you’re trying to keep track of your sugar intake. A doughnut every once in a while isn’t the worst thing in the world.

September 14 is National Cream Filled Donut Day

September 14 is National Cream Filled Donut Day! Whether you enjoy chocolate, vanilla, lemon or ganache filling in your donut, today is the perfect day to enjoy these sweet treats! Donuts came to the United States in the mid-1800s through Dutch settlers that were known for their pastries. The first donut with a hole in the middle is said to be a creation of American Hansen Gregory. Thankfully, someone after Hansen made the brilliant decision to fill that hole with delicious cream filling! These were so well-liked that the Boston Creme Donut, perhaps one of the most popular cream filled donuts, became the official donut of Massachusetts in 2003. Celebrate National Cream Filled Donut Day with a stop at your local bakery for a box of fresh cream filled donuts! Or better yet, make them yourself. punchbowl private chefs and event catering Palm Beach + Boca Raton + Fort Lauderdale + Miami Beach info@yadachef.com | 954-367-YADA (9232) 561-285-7466 www.yadachef.com south florida cate

What's New and Beneficial About Cabbage

Did you know that cabbage was one of two vegetable types (the other type was root vegetables) found to be a mainstay for prevention of type 2 diabetes in a recent study of over 57,000 adults in the country of Denmark? In this very large-scale study, adults who closely followed the Healthy Nordik Food Index were found to have the lowest incidence of type 2 diabetes. Importantly, this key health benefit was linked to six food intake categories: (1) fish, (2) rye bread, (3) oatmeal, (4) apples and pears, (5) root vegetables, and (6) cabbage! Researchers have now identified nearly 20 different flavonoids and 15 different phenols in cabbage, all of which have demonstrated antioxidant activity. This impressive list of antioxidant phytonutrients in cabbage is one key reason why an increasing number of studies link cabbage intake to decreased risk of several cardiovascular diseases. You can read more about these individual antioxidants in our Health Benefits section. In terms of price per

Half Brined Polish Pickles

We love pickles and are often experimenting with different tastes and flavours.  Recently we made some a new batch using no vinegar.  This method is brining them.  The longer they sit the more tangy they get. We also had some left over liquid from a previous batch with had vinegar.  We combined 2 different methods to create a 1/2 brined 1/2 pickled cucumber.  DELICIOUS!  We added fresh horseradish root because we found in Poland it is a common practice.  We had no grape leaves, so we substituted fresh bay leaves.  Both will keep the cucumbers crisp and crunchy.  The brine will get cloudy. Makes 10-16 half pickles 1 pound/500g small pickling pickles (5-6)* 1 cloves crushed garlic 1 thumb sized piece of fresh peeled horseradish root 1 teaspoon/5g yellow mustard seed Small handful fresh dill or 1 tablespoon/15ml dried dill weed 4 cups/1 liter water 1/4 cup/60ml white vinegar 1/4 cup/59ml/55g coarse sea salt OR 2 1/2 Tablespoons/37ml/41g table salt handful fresh dill or 3 tablespoons/45ml

Sous Vide Chicken Roulade with Goat Cheese, Peppers and Arugula Recipe

Sous vide or literally cooking under is a technique that leaves the protein soft, and succulent.  You do need to sear it afterwards or as a client said, “everything is just bland looking”.   Serves 4 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1/2 cup/120g soft goat cheese (chevre) 1 medium red pepper, roasted and  cut into julienne strips 2 handfuls  loosely packed arugula salt & pepper for seasoning 1 teaspoon/5ml olive oil 1 tablespoon butter Set your sous vide cooker to 155ºF/68ºC.  Pat dry your chicken breast and place between 1 long piece of cling film  folded over. Pound with a mallet until it is approximately 1cm thick, a little over 1/4 inch.  Season liberally on both sides with salt & pepper. Spread 2 tablespoons/30g of goat cheese on each piece.  Top each piece with 1/4 of the roasted red peppers. Top that with 1/4 of the arugula. Working from the narrower end if there is one, roll up like a burrito. Set aside on a plate and repeat the proc
